Past whispers of a new UK Soul movement have now turned into full-blown hollering following the underground rise of British-Ghanaian singer-songwriter, DJ and producer Andrew Ashong. The voice and soul behind 2013’s ever-championed ‘Flowers’ a collaborative endeavour with Theo Parish, Andrew has been entitled an essential listen by numerous music press over the past year.
Working in a punctiliously crafted studio located in his home of Forest Hill South London, 2014 has seen the writing and production of the ‘Andrew Ashong EP’ that moves away from the dance-floor orientation of ‘Flowers’ favouring a more languorous, jazz interjected soul sound.
Released January 27th on Andrew’s own infant label Which Way Records, the EP represents a timeless sound, naive and innocent in its DIY production, discerning and nostalgic in its message and delivery. Consisting of friends and family, his live show translates his soul leanings with energetic and heartfelt performances immersing the listener with soothing harmonies, driving backbeats and distinguished musicianship.
